Mercedes Schlapp has no easy work her position as White House adviser for strategic communication. In her role as the White House's Strategic Communications Advisor, Mercedes Schlapp faces a myriad of issues. A president can be the director of his own communications. Yet, through all of it Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission at hand, working closely with White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops, as well as the broader communications operation in order to oversee policy implementations. So far, Schlapp has focused on school safety issues, addiction, infrastructure and international trade. She has not had much contact with media outlets in the job she has. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of media attention when it was it was announced that she would be a potential candidate to fill in Hope Hicks's role as director of communication. In March, she received some interest after her name was suggested as a possible candidate in the race to replace Hope Hicks in the role as communications director. This fight was ugly. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh on the news. Schlapp made a call to Sayegh when that the Washington Examiner printed a bad article about him.
